Common Dental Tourism Procedures – Dental Implant

These days, dental implants are relatively routine and are a popular reason for dental travel, especially to places like India where their cost is significantly lower without compromising on quality and service. We bring you some facts about the same.

Dental Tourism In India

A natural tooth consists of a Crown (visible in the mouth & above the gums) and a Root (part hidden below the gums). It is the root of the tooth that is embedded within the jawbone which actually holds the tooth in place. A Dental Implant is a man-made small Titanium screw that serves as stable replacement for the root portion of the missing tooth. The dental implant is about the same size as the root of a natural tooth. The main component of the implant is Titanium, which is extremely compatible with human body. The implant is placed into the bone and it takes around 4 to 6 weeks for the bone to grow around the implant. Since Titanium is one of the few materials which can form a direct interface between implant and the bone, whereby the implant is accepted into the jawbone which tends to fuse around it. Once the implant is stable within the bone a special Titanium post called the abutment is screwed into the implant. Following this the crown is usually screwed into place.

Dental Implants are the best possible alternatives available today for missing teeth. They slow or stop the process of shrinkage of jawbones around missing teeth thereby improving facial appearance. They look or feel just like natural teeth. Dentures often cause mumbling, slurred speech and clicking sounds. Dental Implants allow improved speech which is confident, relaxed and in natural tone. Implants are incredibly strong helping one to bite and chew just as well as with your natural teeth. You can eat your favorite food with confidence and without pain.

Dental Implant maintenance is of prime importance following the placement of the same. Poor oral hygiene is related to marginal bone loss causing loosening of the implant. Proper hygiene is critical so the patient should understand the importance of plaque control.

An implant brush is the most important tool for plaque control. A soft bristle brush type is effective for cleaning the abutment and prosthesis. It is used at the gingiva-abutment junction. The size should be comfortable for the patient.

Unlike other dental treatments, the cost of dental implants is affected by so many different factors that rarely two cases are exactly the same. Before you start comparing prices in order to choose an implant dentist or clinic, you should first make clear what exactly is included in the price. This could be a bit confusing especially if multiple professionals will be involved in the treatment (e.g. your general dentist, a periodontics or oral surgeon and a prosthodontics), but it is absolutely important in order to avoid any surprises. The average cost of a single Dental implant in the U.S is around $3000, and in India it is around $650.
